When children are experiencing BIG feelings, it can make it hard for them to think, solve problems, or calm down. When they have strategies they can easily use, they’ll feel supported. It will be easier for them to get back on the path to feeling calm.Have your child help you to make a calming cube that your child can use when they are experiencing BIG feelings. Each side of the cube will have a strategy that helps the child to feel calm.
- Tape shut a small- to medium-sized square-shaped cardboard box
- Cut out squares of paper that will fit on each side of the box
- Write activities that might help your child calm down on each square of paper: examples include stretch, wiggle and shake, take 3 belly breaths, draw about it, listen to music, snuggle with a stuffie, etc. (whatever helps your child to calm down)
- Tape or glue the paper squares to each side of the box
- Practice by rolling the cube and completing the activity that your child rolls
- Have this available for your child to use at home when they are trying to manage BIG feelings
